Some of our recent projects: - residents at the House of Ruth (a transitional housing facility for abused women and their children) created self-portraits inspired by the work of Joan Miró. They wrote poems about themselves giving them an opportunity for positive self-expression. - program participants at the Rose Street Community Center were introduced to the art and writing of Faith Ringgold, whose work explores the roles and empowerment of African American women. The students then made a collaborative quilt in which each participant¹s contribution depicted his/her goals and aspirations. - girls at the Jane Egenton House created their own journals from making the paper for each page to binding them with a unique cover. This meaningful exercise helped them to develop their self expression and encouraged tenacity during the lengthy process. - students in an after-school program at Charles Carroll of Carrollton Middle School turned old chairs into colorful works of art that reflected their feelings and aspirations. The chairs were exhibited at a local gallery giving these students a rare opportunity to enjoy creative expression and success. - teenage boys at the Kanner and Debuskey residential facilities operated by The Childrens Guild painted concrete pavers to create a colorful path between the yards of these two homes giving them the ability to have a positive impact on their living environment and to learn important team building skills. |
