ABOUT THE PROJECT

The mural before you has been touched by hundreds of hands and lives throughout the Baltimore community, including the staff and families of the Esperanza Center, the young scholars of Adelante Latina, the students of the Johns Hopkins University Hop-In Program, the high school students of Art with a Heart’s Art of Leadership program, and over 30 individual volunteers and community members engaged through Art with a Heart.

This mosaic was inspired by traditional Latin American weaving patterns. The soaring ceramic birds are barn swallows that migrate from South to North America every year, and their silver color is in appreciation of the legacy of Mexican tin art. The tapestry of repeating and intersecting patterns, colors, and shapes reflects the beauty and complexity of the immigrant story.

Mosaic made with ceramic tiles made in Mexico and hand-made ceramic birds.
