ABOUT THE PROJECT

In recognition of its 20th anniversary, Art with a Heart gifted The Heart of Baltimore to The City of Baltimore and the University of Maryland Medical Center. With the help of hundreds of volunteers, the organization created The Heart of Baltimore, a beautiful mosaic and ceramic heart, as a gesture of love for the city and a tribute to the devoted health care workers who tirelessly served our community during the pandemic. The sculpture, measuring 6 by 8 feet, is on permanent display on the corner of S. Greene and W. Lombard Streets at the Gudelsky Entrance of University of Maryland Medical Center to honor the resilience of a community during a time of international hardship.

The sculpture features 18 different colors of glass, mirror and recycled glow-in-the-dark tiles. 192 pounds of glass were hand scored by volunteers, interns and students, and over 950 people devoted their time to create close to 2,500 ceramic hearts that feature messages and love and encouragement. The project is truly a city-wide undertaking that appropriately reflects the vibrant Baltimore community. The sculpture was unveiled during a ceremony on November 4, 2021.
