Heart of Baltimore Sculpture Unveiled in Honor of 20th Anniversary

November 8, 2021

On Thursday, November 5, 2021 Art with a Heart unveiled The Heart of Baltimore, a 1,000 pound sculpture at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). It is now on permanent display outside of UMMC’s Gudelsky Entrance at the corner of West Lombard and South Greene streets. The 8 x 6 foot hand-crafted heart was created in honor of Art with a Heart’s 20th Anniversary.

Art with a Herat bestowed the sculpture, constructed entirely during the COVID-19 pandemic, upon the University of Maryland Medical Center and the citizens of Baltimore as a gesture of love and gratitude, and to honor frontline health care workers. During the past 18 months, nearly 1,000 Baltimore community members devoted their time to create close to 2,500 ceramic hearts with messages of love and encouragement that adorn the piece. Speakers and dignitaries present at Thursday’s unveiling included Baltimore City Mayor Brandon Scott, UMMC President and CEO Bert O’Malley, AWAH Founder and Executive Director Randi Pupkin, and Joanne Brooks of The Harbor City LINKS Inc.
